The Carnival of Venice is the oldest that exists and is unique in the world. The first official document is from the year 1296, declaring holiday the day before Lent. Then, the families of the high Venetian society disguised masks to hide their identity and mingled with the common people
. Today is a holiday recognized throughout the world and brings in the City of Canals thousands of tourists every year.
The "Angel Flight" is the show that opens the Carnival. It is when a disguise artist descends a rope with metal from the Bell Tower of San Marcos to the Doge's Palace.
This year, the carnival ends on February 17th.
